Information: Major Godfrey Place D.S.O. M.C., East Surrey Regiment, enlisted in the now famous ”D” Company of the 7th Batt. Royal Dublin Fusiliers in September, 1914, and shortly afterwards obtained a commission in the East Surrey Regiment, with which he has seen service in France, both on the Somme and in the northern part of the line. He was awarded the Military Cross in November, 1916, and the Distinguished Service Order in one of the many attacks on the Passchendaele Ridge in October, 1917 in which he was wounded.
