Information: Brigadier General John Edmond Gough, V.C., C.B., C.M.G., A.D.C., who died from wounds received in action, was on the staff at Aldershot as principal General Staff Officer to Sir Douglas Haig at the time of the mobilisation in August, and went out for Staff work with the Army Corps. In the great retreat from the Mons line to Paris he did admirable work, and was mentioned in despatches on October 8th by the Commander-in-Chief. John Gough was a brilliant officer, and won by his work in action the V.C., C.B., C.M.G., and brevet promotion. He was an A.D.C. to the King, and greatly interested himself in the Public Schools training camps. The death of Brigadier-General J. E. Gough places several families in and around Clonmel in mourning. He was born on 25th October, 1871, and in 1907 he married Dorothea, daughter of General Keyes.
